Meet Guest Author M.J. Moores

I can’t thank Chris enough for spotlighting me and my debut novel Time’s Tempest on his book blog. It’s opportunities such as these that help spread the word and the love 😉

Melissa6 portraitHi there, bet you’re wondering why I’m using my initials M.J. instead of my full name. Honestly, I didn’t want to scare male readers away from considering my book but then, my publisher and I agreed that an image of the main characters eyes on the cover would add to the mystery of the book… and we all know that guys don’t like walking around with a book that might remotely hint at women or love… even if it’s not “women’s fiction” or “romance” – so I sort of shot myself in the foot there. But I don’t mind. All throughout high school my teachers and peers called me M.J. at my request. After semester one of grade 9 I realized that there were an awful lot of girls with the same name as me in my year. So it’s really not such a ridiculous moniker to be known by.

Today’s guest blog post, on the topic of the craft of writing, is brought to you by M J Moores.

Layering as a Technique for Building Depth

by M.J. Moores, OCT. Author. Editor. Freelance Writer.

MelissaAll of the writing greats tell us that the deeper the connection between the reader and our story, the farther we will go as authors.

But what does that really mean? How can we, as writers, craft that vital connection?

Personally, I find it incredibly taxing to even consider developing that kind of depth in my first draft – characters, setting, and action aren’t fully calculated until my plot is hammered out… even if it’s a character-driven plot. As a planner, you’d think I’d have it all figured out before I let the story flow – but what’s the fun in doing that? Sure, I’ll plan out specific moments that are intrinsic to…

The End of a Tour…

… but the Beginning of a New Age

I must admit that I have been lax in announcing the winners of my blog tour giveaway. I know who you are, I do! I’m not being lazy and the procrastination in letting you know you’ve won stems from a blissful exhaustion for a hard week’s worth of virtual book touring and an equally long month to my book launch since it became available October 1st.

Knowing that I have a smattering more of guest posts to participate in at the beginning of November and the fact that I’m nearly 10,000 words into writing a new book for NaNoWriMo (national novel writing month)… oh, and did I mention that all my Saturday’s for this month are booked with author events too?

Do you see now why this post is coming a little late? and my fabulous winners have been left holding their breath in anticipation of learning who they are…

Needless to say, I’d like to thank everyone for participating in the tour organized by DKC (Dragon Knight Chronicles) – whether you joined in the giveaway fun or simply read a post or two here or on another host-site… it really does mean the world to me to know you’re out there 🙂

And so, without further ado (or procrastination) the winners of both a prequel copy of Time’s Tempest: The Lost Chapters and Time’s Tempest: The Chronicles of Xannia are…

The Book Launch was a Success!

My local book launch for Time’s Tempest was a great success even though it decided to snow in Ontario and get really cold the day after Halloween 😉 There was still a lot of foot-traffic at the book store and I got to meet new fans and visit with family and friends. The store manager placed me five feet from the main door just in front of the direct access to the coffee shop – it was a great location to be seen by bookies and coffee lovers alike! I just want to thank all of you, too, for the well-wishes along the way and the wonderful support. This is just the beginning my friends 😀

TIME’S TEMPEST

The Chronicles of Xannia, Part One

By: M. J. Moores

Book Interview

1. Can you tell us a bit about your newest release, Time’s Tempest, and how The Chronicles of Xannia are different, and similar, to the Lost Chapter series?

First off, The Lost Chapters are a part of The Chronicles of Xannia. Effectively the Lost Chapters are a collection of short stories that take place before the action of the book Time’s Tempest. These lost chapters are stories that have been mentioned in passing that deal with a time in either Taya or Dezmind’s past that influence who they have become when we meet them in the main book. It’s not necessary to have read the Lost Chapters in order to understand Time’s Tempest, they are simply meant as added enjoyment to the tale.

2. What can you tell us about the…

What do You do When it’s Your First Time?

Guest post by M.J. Moores, OCT. Author. Editor. Freelance Writer.

So, “IT” happens – after dozens of rejection letters from agents you dedicated the last three months to finding a small publisher looking for exactly your kind of book… and you found one. The company rep sends you the standard first-time client contract and at the end of the email writes –

“Just look it over, print it out and sign it. Then scan it and email it back to us and the rest is history.”

Nuh-uh – you’ve only just stepped into the worm hole and there’s quite a ride until you pop out the other side. First off, if you don’t belong to a renowned writer’s community like SFWA (Science Fiction Fantasy Writers of America) or a local writer’s union/guild who employ or provide access to literary lawyers and…
